Man who fell off car died after being hit by SUV in Ottawa
A man who fell out of his car in downtown Ottawa and died from his injuries has been identified as a 32-year-old Canadian citizen who lived in Alberta.
John St-Pierre died Friday at a hospital.
He was the first man to die in Ottawa from a vehicle crash in 20 years.
His family said he was not the only victim.
“It’s very sad, especially when you think about what’s happening in the world,” his sister, Sandra St- Pierre, told reporters outside her family’s home in St-Henri-sur-Mer, Que.
“We are devastated for his family and we hope they find some solace, comfort and peace.”
John St.-Pierre, 32, was pronounced dead at the hospital after his vehicle struck a vehicle on the sidewalk, a spokesman for the Ottawa Police Service said.
A passerby reported hearing a loud crash and seeing the driver of the car get out, said Const.
Montague said the man who was struck was not wearing a seat belt and that he was wearing a “small piece of equipment” on his left side.
The driver of a car, a woman in her 20s, was also not wearing seat belts, Montague added.
The woman was not injured.
The crash was reported at about 3:30 p.m.
A pedestrian was treated at the scene, and police said the driver was taken to hospital.
Montagues father, who lives in the Ottawa suburb of Laurier, was among the people who came to the scene.
“He was so well-liked in Laurier,” said John St. Pierre, whose brother and sister live in the same neighbourhood.
“This is a terrible day.”
